Tynemouth Station Opening event & Diamond Jubilee celebrations

04.06.2012

Description

June 4th will mark the formal opening of the restored 130 year old Tynemouth Station and the beginning of an ongoing programme of cultural activities, using the Station as a venue.

As part of the pre-opening programme a number of activities have been commissioned to mark the opening including; a short film outlining the restoration process; a Community Theatre performance reflecting stories relating to the station and the community experince.  In addition a new piece of music has been commissioned from Tyneside born composer James Rae, to be performed by the schools music orchestra and there will also be eight local authors producing short stories, inspired by aspects of the station, who will be reading at the event.

A further programme of events will also take place to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrating 60 years on the throne.  As well as Diamond Jubilee parties, picnics and festivals there will be a Jubilee Beacon lit at Segedunum Roman Fort, Baths and Museum.  The national project will aim to see 2,012 beacons lit throughout the UK on Monday June 4th in celebration of the Queen's life and her reign.  The lighting of the beacon at Segendunum will link with a proposal to light 60 beacons across the length of Hadrian's Wall.

Further activities and performances will also take place at the station linked to the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations.
