Post Press Release from 2009 Ball:
Champagne flowed as Celebrities turned up to raise more than 40,000 for meningitis victim Tilly Lockey.
An event at Gatesheads Hilton Hotel on Saturday 5th September saw more than 100 celebrity handprints auctioned to raise money for the three-year-old, who lost both her hands to meningitis at the age of 15 months.
At the dinner where Denise Welch, business tycoon Duncan Bannatyne, Emmerdales Charlie Hardwick and Vicky Hawkins, and Waterloo Roads Chris Greere. A film of Tillys life was shown and there was music from Corrie star-turned-singer Richard Fleeshman, who flew into Newcastle from America for the event.
More than 100 prints and hand casts, including those of Sir Bobby Robson, pop group Girls Aloud, and actors Tom Hanks and Whoopi Goldberg, were auctioned off.
JK Rowlings and Girls Alouds went for 6,000 each, while the print from the late Sir Bobby Robson went for 4,000. Duncan Bannatyne bought the Girls Aloud cast for 6,000 and said he would be putting it in one of his hotels.
The event was organised by Shes Gott It! alongside Tillys parents Adam & Sarah Lockey, who have worked tirelessly to raise money for Tilly, so she can live as normal a life as possible.
Dragons Den star Duncan Bannatyne said She is a cracking girl. It is important to support charities, especially when children are involved. This is a particularly great charity, and ever since I heard about Tilly I have done all I can to support everything since.
But it was Tilly who was the real star of the show, in a beautiful white dress, smiling happily at the hundreds of people all there for her. Mum Sarah, 29 said she knew it would be an emotional evening. She said I was very emotional, very overwhelmed. Its like two-and-a half years of putting something together and then seeing the final piece.
The whole evening was amazing, just amazing. Everyone has been coming to me and saying what a great night it was. Our initial count of the money raised was somewhere in the region of 41,000, which is fantastic. I have been really lucky with the companies that have got involved. Its mind blowing that so many people have helped. It was all for Tilly and thats why it was so emotional. All these people came together to help my baby. So many celebrities donated hand prints to be auctioned and the bidding went through the roof. The top seller was JK Rowlings for 6,000 which was amazing because we only expected it to make about 2,000.
Big Brothers Liam McGough and Anthony Hutton were also at the bash. Liam said: When I came out of Big Brother I did a couple of charity events in the North East and met Tilly and her mum. She is such a lovely little lass, your heart just goes out to her.
Denise Welch, who is currently filming for Waterloo Road, wore a stunning purple dress with a long slit at the side. The 50 year old star, from Ebchester, County Durham, who is married to Geordie Actor Tim Healy, told how proud she is to be patron of the charity. Im just delighted to help she said. Its lovely to be in my home town with Tilly.
Tilly was diagnosed with meningitis in January 2007.
Her family were told to prepare for the worst, but Tilly battled against the illness and returned home after four weeks in hospital and 10 blood transfusions. But the disease damaged her hands and toes so badly they had to be amputated.
In July that year, the family started the campaign to raise money for myo-electric hands.
In October 2007, Tilly celebrated her second birthday. Two months later she took her first steps without toes. The Give Tilly A hand Appeal reached 100,000 in July last year, and in January, Tilly started nursery and got her first pair of hands. As the Beechdale Nursey School pupil grows, she will continue to need to pairs of hands per year until she reaches 18. Each pair, not available on the NHS, cost more than 20,000.
In March, Tilly Received 50,000 in NHS funding, spread over five years.
